The Church of the Living God at 2029 Binney Street in Omaha, Nebraska, is young Marc L. Nichols’s second home. Nichols is well known throughout the congregation as Pastor Luke Nichols’s scamp of a son who often needs to be taught a lesson. Between his mother’s chronic illness, his father’s calling, and his status as the sixth of seven children, Marc craves attention and sometimes acts out.
But Marc’s fun-filled days come to an end after his mother dies when he is ten. The family is left shaken to its core, and Marc’s relationship with his father becomes fraught as Pastor Luke struggles to take on his wife’s role in the home. Time passes, but things do not improve. His children clash with the women he meets, and he and Marc have an explosive falling out after he remarries. Angry and frustrated, Marc leaves home at the age of sixteen and doesn’t speak with his father for years.
In this memoir, Marc examines his childhood and tries to reconcile the many facets of his father. Despite their past estrangement, Marc paints a picture of his father as a pious, yet occasionally flawed, man and humanizes a great pastor.

When I received this long anticipated book, I just flipped through the pages but didn't start reading it until a few days later and finished it in 3 days. I learned so much about Marc and what propelled him to be the man he is. Boy, he was a rebellious little hellraiser! BUT GOD!Throughout the different short stories, I followed how his father molded him into the man he matured to become. The road wasn't easy but it was a path he had to take and there were obstacles he had to encounter and overcome. The story about Forgiveness had me in tears...I could feel his pain and his release. God is so good. I'm glad he was able to forgive not only his dad ( and be able to spend time with him) but also to forgive himself...which we know forgiveness releases us. Thanks for the shout out...that was totally unexpected. You never know what kind of impact you have on someone just by exhibiting what God has instilled in you. So it touch my heart very deeply that you would give me a shout out and it shows that you WERE listening to me when I talked to you!!!!

This book was well written. I loved how the author tells a story then takes you back in time as if it was yesterday. I laughed at some of his "lessons learned" and I cried because of some of the things he had to go through in life. I would definitely recommend and have recommended this book. As it is an easy read for people who are not even avid readers. Kuddos to you Marc! You did an AWESOME job! Congratulations!
Excellent story about a young boy who learned lessons from his father whether he wanted to or not. A good read for everyone, especially those who are trying to find their way in the cold cruel world
This book kept my attention from beginning to the end. I learned some life lessons about growth and forgiveness along with some tears and laughs. I'm having a hard time finding something to read after this because nothing seems good enough. Great job Nichols!
Couldn't wait for this book to hit the shelves so I could support my childhood friend and author Marc Nichols. Had no idea how much of my life story he'd be telling. I salute you my friend for having the courage to share so much of yourself with the world. Very proud, I know your parents are as well.
The author's growing into manhood story is one of humor, compassion and life lessons. This book speaks to the strength of the human spirit, and the fact that as imperfect humans we sometimes hurt the ones we love. Rising above that deep hurt, forgiving and learning how to move toward healing is a message that everyone can benefit from! Get this book, GIFT this book, pass on the healing message found within its pages!
This is book could use a 6 Star Rating! As a first time writer Marc put it out there beautifully! The first thing I thought after reading it was, I really need to call my daughter! The short stories were easy to read and follow. Every one with a different message that people of all ages can relate to. No matter your ethnicity or age, this "Life Lessons Learned" book would be a great addition to any Bible Study Group, Middle school and High school Libraries and in the homes of not only our young men but our young ladies too! It will definitely keep your attention from beginning to end!
As he candidly and directly takes his readers along on his sometimes bumpy ride from childhood, thru missing it, into manhood; Marc hits this one outta the park! Each chapter the reader is drawn closer, watching him learn and grow without knowing, as he experiences a father’s unadulterated tough-love on his journey to finding the Right Road. Through the laughter and tears, I sympathized with the man-child as he endured loses along the way and empathized with the man, as he grew to understand, realize, and accept the undying love and wisdom imparted to him by his father. If you get nothing else from this book, you’ll learn that “Forgiveness will heel you and set you free.” This is a MUST READ!
